Ask Terry Questions Ira beneficiary Spousal Survivor

Ira beneficiary Spousal Survivor

By Terry Savage on September 30, 2024 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My husband passed in 2013 and I am beneficiary of his retirement account.
Do I need to take RMD’s starting this year? I wasn’t sure if the rules were different for widows.
Or Should I roll it over to avoid taking RMD? I just turned 70.
Thank you

The question is whether HE had started taking RMDs before his death. If yes, then you must continue.
If no, then you can either keep it separate as an inherited IRA (which must be distributed within 10years) or roll it into your own IRA, which will subject it to the RMDs based on your age.
You should ask the custodian of the account about these options.
