Ask Terry Questions IRA withdrawal penalties for MRD

IRA withdrawal penalties for MRD

By Terry Savage on January 06, 2015 | Chicken Money

I am 71 years old. I am taking RMD’s from an IRA CD which is about to mature. If I roll over the CD at the same bank and then find a better interest rate at another bank later, say in 6 months, can I rollover the money to the other bank without any penalty?

Thank you!
Doris

Terry Says:  You must ask your bank if there is a penalty for breaking out of an IRA CD early.  You say you are “taking distributions” from your existing CD.  I’m assuming that you take some money out each year for MRD, without penalty.  If so, that should apply to moving your entire CD to a different institution.  But each institution sets its own rules on that issue, so get it in writing.
