Ask Terry Questions IRS amended return

IRS amended return

By Terry Savage on August 16, 2020 | Wild Card

H&R Block originally e-filed our taxes during early March. We later discovered there was a serious error. They attributed it to a “glitch” in the software. A week later we filed an amended return. We are now owed $2104.00. Because of the COVID, we have not received the refund. The IRS website advises us not to re-file. We periodically check our refund status at IRS. gov to no avail

Today we received a CP14. What do we do? I do not want to incur penalties. But how can we prove that our amended return is part of the IRS logjam.

Thanks in advance.

Wow, this IS serious! Here are my three suggestions – -and on top of that I suggest you act quickly before the IRS mistakenly files a lien on your home or garnishes your wages.

1. Immediately contact H&R Block office that did your return and ask to speak to the manager. If just workers there, ask for the corporate office that supervises your region. Tell them what you told me. I hope you have something written from the original office that did your return, acknowledging a software error. If you can’t reach someone in authority, please send me an email with details, and I’ll try to escalate it to their corporate communications office.

2. Contact the IRS Taxpayer’s Ombudsman’s office to file a complaint and exploanation.

3. If all else fails you’ll need a tax attorney, which will be expensive. But if you file suit against H&R Block, they may be foreced to pay your legal fees. Use this as a last alternative.

But do start work on BOTH #1 and #2 immediately. Pls let me know what happens.
