IRS Refund for a Deceased Parent
I filed (by mail) in late Feb 2026 a 1040 return for the portion of 2025 that my mother was living. The expected refund is in excess of $10,000, and will be a check. The return was in Mom’s name, c/o my name, at my street address. On March 10 of this year the residence at that address was destroyed by the tornado. So I have installed a new mailbox on my now-empty lot to receive mail there, as the Post office tells me that IRS / govt type things will not be forwarded but returned to sender. I have received the IRS letter, made the phone call, and have sent in (on May 29) the requested FORM 56, using the same home address, as I didn’t want to change the address for fear of further muddying the waters. In trying to call the phone number again to check if the form was received, I am told that there is a large volume of calls “in my subject matter, call back some other time” and *click*. If I go to IRS.gov and open an account, am I opening an account in my name, or in my mother’s name c/o me ? I have read your column on this subject and understand that the large (and uncommon for Mom) refund is what has flagged this return. Any help would be appreciated, as I need to change my address on my Drivers License soon, but can’t because I need to be able to prove that the old address is indeed my address for mailing purposes. By the way, my CPA just shrugs his shoulders.

OMG — what else could go wrong? First of all, I don’t think it will help to open an IRS.gov account. It will just say things are “in process” — At least, that’s what everyone is telling me. But you know that. And it won’t speed things along.
My best guess is to go ahead and change your address. And then have the PO forward the mail to you. In my own experience, they seem to forward EVERYTHING.
I wish I could give you more hope of getting that check!
