IRS sent stimulus to someone else’s account

By Terry Savage on January 06, 2021 | Wild Card

Good morning,
According to the IRS website and Get my payment tool, My stimulus check went to someone else’s account. My first direct deposit stimulus went thru and shows correct account. What do I do to receive it and why would they send to a different account? They do not provide a phone number to call and I have not changes banks or accounts.
Thank you.

This is the third time today I have received a question along these lines. I am hoping it is problem with the iRS tool — and not with actual payments. I passed it along to the IRS, and will report back if I have any new information.

In the meantime, wait a few more days to see if the $600 magically arrives in your account! If not, you can claim it when you file your 2020 return in a few weeks on Line 30. That will at least trigger an IRS mismatch and might get you some response.
