IRS Stimulus Info Safety
I received an alert on my Newsbreak app on my phone stating that I had until noon on Wednesday (May 13th) to register with the IRS for automatic payments. It told me to go to the IRS website and click on My Payment Info or something like that. So, I googled IRS.gov and saw the link and clicked on it. It stated that they need more information from me and needed my 2019 or 2018 tax information. I entered the information requested, my husband’s SS#, adjusted gross income, the amount we had to pay in 2018 and our checking account information. It said I successfully signed up. Then, I called my sister and she was afraid it was a scam. I went into your website and the link to the IRS looked different than what I saw so now I’m concerned. Was it safe to google IRS.gov and give them the information?

If you actually went to www.IRS.gov and entered the info it is safe. Look back through the cache (previous websites visited) and make sure it was the IRS site. It’s probably ok as long as you didn’t click on a link in that warning on your app.
