Medicaid
Need financial advice for 19 year old granddaughter. Her Dad (divorced from Mom & remarried) is moving to Arizona and dropping her from his health insurance. She lives in Kentucky with only her Mom, who is disabled and receives Soc Security Disability. My granddaughter stays in a state of depression and has been diagnosed as bi-polar. Is there a chance she could apply for Medicaid? Or, if she makes application thru the Ky health exchange for insurance, would they consider her Mom’s social security disability money as part of the “household income”? Her Mom also has a car and she has a car but it is in her Mom’s name. They both live in a house which the Mom pays a mortgage. Any help or advice you can give? I would appreciate it greatly.

Whew, that’s a truly unfortunate situation — and it doesn’t sound like it will get any better, unless your granddaughter gets help. How ugly of her father to drop her from his health insurance plan.
I just searched “apply for Medicaid in Kentucky” and found a wealth of resources, starting here: https://kynect.ky.gov/s/?language=en_US
Since your granddaughter is 19 she will be considered an adult in Kentucky — and eligible for a wide range of benefits including Medicaid and food stamps (SNAP), since she doesn’t own any property.
But most important is to get her treatment for her bi-polar. That’s possible with medication, so she can live a productive life on her own. And also counseling, because she needs to see a way out, so she doesn’t wind up like her mother — completely dependent on the state.
It would be a shame for her to give up at this young age. I hope you will encourage her to visit this website — not only for health insurance and support money — but for a better future.
