Medicare And SecurityBefore Retirement

By Terry Savage on October 16, 2022 | Financial Planning / Retirement

Hi Terry, My husband will be 65 on March 5th, 2023. He is going continue to work until he is 67 and get his health insurane (and mine) thru work(a good Union job with greath health care and great pension). He is not going to start collecting Social Security until 70. When does he have to sign up for Medicare and Social Security? And what is the best way to do this?

Terry Says

Great idea to wait to collect until age 70! He should sign up for Social Security Part A when he reaches his full retirement age — and not before. If he has comparable coverage, he doesn’t have to sign up for Medicare until he retires. That works because he is in a union that presumably has more than 50 members! (Companies with fewer employees need to have workers sign up for Medicare when eligible as it becomes the primary payor for their policies.)
When he does sign up for Medicare he should also purchase a supplement at the same time. Because if you sign up for the supplement within 6 months of becoming eligible for Medicare you cannot be turned down for the best supplement.
