Medicare Medigap coverage — tough choices, need help!

By Terry Savage on November 24, 2019 | Wild Card

I will be 80 years old in July and my husband 83 in June of 2020. We have comprehensive coverage with our current
medigap stand-alone plan (Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield- Wisconsin) and have no reason to change except for the cost.
The cost does not include any of the added benefits that the advantage plans cover. I don’t believe changing to an
advantage plan will save us money in the end. We live in a rural WI area (Dodge Co) so finding good medical help
isn’t always easy without traveling.

An insurance agent is coming tomorrow to talk about a company known as United American which is more affordable but the first place I looked on the web did share reviews which tells me NOT to go there.
Where can I go to get to the truth of this company? I haven’t had good luck with Medicare.gov.

Also we have a Basic Anthem plan now with additional riders for Part A, Part B Deductible, Excess Charges,
Additional Health care, and Foreign Travel (which we do not need). Anthem offers a Part B Co-payment/Co-Insurance in addition to the Part B medical deductible Rider. (We would pay $20 office visit, $50 Emergency room, PLUS the Part B Deductible). We can only choose one Part B rider, not both.

Choosing the newer co-payment/co-insurance rider would drop our monthly premiums but I’m afraid it could
cost us much more in the end. And, having to deal with the annual insurance coverage thing is a nightmare.

Thank you for your weekly well-written columns in our daily paper. Today’s article sent me to my computer to
write to you. I’m very reluctant to give up our comprehensive coverage; we might not be able to get it back.
I don’t like that Medicare is pushing people into Advantage plans. The idea is to get rid of Medicare.

I’m hoping to hear from you before morning ‘tho I know you will not be so freely available. I would appreciate your
thoughts on this.

Stay well!
