Ask Terry Questions Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D

By Terry Savage on March 30, 2022 | Financial Planning / Retirement

In your column in the Chicago Tribune some months ago I thought you said to sign up for Medicare Part D even if you don’t need it. However, there was no explanation for this statement. I turned 65 in December 2022, am completely healthy and do not take any medications. Please, can you explain why I should get Medicare Part D?

Terry Says

Because if one day you DO need medications (a real possibility) then you will pay a penalty in the form of a much higher annual fee. Read this link for specifics as to how the penalty is computed, but it is steep.

There are plenty of plans at Medicare.gov where if you enter the fact that you currently have no prescriptions, you pay a monthly fee of about $12. Sign up for one of those. Even if you only need an antibiotic for a few weeks, the Part D plan will pay for itself.
