Ask Terry Questions Medicare/social security

Medicare/social security

By Terry Savage on January 15, 2025 | Wild Card

Hi Terry, I’m turning 66 (5/19/1958). I’m still working full time but want to receive my social security. Will I be able to do that without being penalized? Also I have insurance with my job & Medicare part A. Do I need to register for part A & B?

Terry Says

You’re about to make an expensive mistake. DO NOT TAKE Social Security until your FULL Retirement Age. If you were born in 1958, that happens at age 66 years and 8 months. You can apply for benefits one or two months before that date, and stress that you do NOT want benefits to start before Full Retirement Age.
Unless your job requires it, you do not have to sign up for Medicare until you leave your job.
