My 97yr old mother”s taxes on Pennsylvania.

By Terry Savage on July 28, 2024 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I pay her taxes. What does she need to do to not pay taxes. She has SS and a very small check from my deceased stepfather’s job as income. Her house is in reverse mortgage and I travel back and forth from Illinois to Pennsylvania to make sure she is taken care of . Thank you for any advise you can give.

She probably has to file taxes in 2024 if her income was at least $13,850 — as a single filer.  Here’s the link to the IRS page describing the levels:  Here’s who needs to file a tax return in 2024 | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov)

And your Social Security benefits are included in your adjusted gross income.  Is Social Security Included in Your AGI? (smartasset.com)

But the filing process should be a simple one.  You can use IRS Freefile:  IRS Free File: Do your taxes for free | Internal Revenue Service
