Odd dependent situation; stimulus check

By Terry Savage on April 27, 2020 | Wild Card

I’m sure I know the answer already, the government will never figure out my situation, but on the off chance I figured I would ask. We’re a low income family, so my mom asked all of us over the years to file dependent for as legally possible (I’m 23). So when I filled for 2019, I listed as dependent. However, my parents have put off filling for a couple years now due to so many reasons, so I’m wondering, am I still technically claimed as a dependent? My stimulus check status is inconclusive every time I check, so I have an idea this is why (or purely because I filled as a dependent). Your thoughts and advice?

OK, that IS interesting. Lots of moving pieces here. If YOU listed yourself as a dependent on YOUR return for 2019, you can’t go back and change that. So you won’t — or likely won’t — get a stimulus check. They won’t see a return for your parents confirming that, but you signed your return saying that, so I’m 99% sure you’re out of luck.
And since your parents haven’t filed in two years, they won’t get a stimulus check either. You should urge them to file for eithr 2018 or 2019 now, assuming they were required to file based on their income, but just didn’t.
And if they didn’t file because they had low income and weren’t required to file, they should register here:

If they DO file, they shouldn’t list you as a dependent. Maybe you will have a long shot to protest your status down the road!
