Older Singles and Financial Picture

By Terry Savage on August 29, 2024 | Wild Card

Hi Terry,
On Wed Aug 28th 2024, a single male gentleman called in to the noon WGN radio show with you and John Williams. The caller wanted your opinion on his thought that having never married nor with children all these years he has come to believe that “single people with no family have it more financially difficult” and in other ways. How serious it all can be. Possibly he was suggesting that singles have to be very wise in how we invest, plan, etc. You seemed to agree in ways. You began explaining how emotionally it is hard, who gets called at 3AM if there’s an emergency, etc. You also began speaking about “something that single older women know” — when John noticed the caller was no longer on the line and your conversation ended mid-sentence. Can you please expand on your previous thoughts? As a single older woman, I’m curious! I too have often pondered and feel the true challenge in ways of “taking care of it all” in every way by myself. My married friends rarely understand my reality nor can they relate.
Thanks!

Terry Says

Yes, sorry that phone call dropped. Actually, there is a lot to say on this subject. So you’ve given me an idea for a column, which I’m sure you’ll see in your paper (Sunday Tribune in Chicago)or on my website in coming weeks. There’s a lot to discuss on this topic — emotional, financial, organizational. I see it more and more in friends my age!
