Ask Terry Questions ownership time line rules for I bonds

ownership time line rules for I bonds

By Terry Savage on September 30, 2026 | Wild Card

When does the five-year clock start for an inherited I bond? I could not find any information about this on Treasury Direct.

Thank you,

Whew, that’s a good question. I assume you went to this page:
https://www.treasurydirect.gov/savings-bonds/manage-bonds/death-of-owner/

Let me put that question to my TreasuryDirect contact. I believe that since you (or the estate) must pay taxes on the accumulated interest on the bond at the time of death, that a new ownership period would start. But let me confirm that.
