Paper tax return and stimulus payment
My granddaughter, who is 19, filed her first tax return this year. She filed on paper. I know the IRS was not working on paper returns for a while but not sure that is still the case. When she checks the website it says the return is processing. When she checked for the stimulus it says they don’t have enough information. I assume that she will not get the stimulus until they process her tax return. Do you know what the current status is for paper tax returns? Or is there anything else we can do? She lost her job before Covid-19 and hasn’t been able to find a job. She could really use that money. Thank you.

So here’s the big question: Was she declared as a dependent on her PARENTS’ return in 2018 or 2019? If so, she will not receive a stimulus payment. If she was declared in 2018, but NOT in 2019, when she filed her own return, then — NEXT YEAR, when she files her 2020 return presumably in April, 2021, THEN she can ask for a $1200 credit against any taxes she owes or that were withheld in 2020.
Complicated I know, but I’m betting this dependent status is at the root of the issue.
