Percent in the market with age
Do not need my rmd’s and am contributing 1000k/mo. to a balanced undex fund as well as a dividend appreciation fund all with Vanguard. The split is about 60/40. Again, I am 79 years old and at this point, comfortable…thoughts? No mortgage, no debt .Thank you Terry, LOVE your column and books and have followed you for years for unbiased valuable financial advice. Please keep on informing us, invaluable to me and ALL your followers who trust you, CANNOT PUT A PRICE ON “THAT!”
Terry Says
Thanks for your note. My response would depend on your overall financial situation. Consider: If we had a severe bear market —say a drop of 40% or more — (that happens, and I’ve lived through three of them!) how would you feel if you lost nearly half of that 60%??
Would you have the financial and mental strength to live on the balance if it took a decade to recover? (I’ve lived through that too!)
This is where it’s worth getting the unbiased advice of a fee-only FIDUCIARY advisor — who is not trying to sell you something and get commissions. And who will look at your overall situation, including income needs and costs as you age.
