Why not keep it in a safety deposit box if my children know where the key is hidden?

Good question. In a crisis, or over a weekend, there is not always time to get to a safety deposit box! Unless you have very snoopy friends or neighbors, just put it in a place where you (in case your wallet is stolen and you need the list of your credit cards and numbers) or your children could find it in an emergency. You might put it in an envelope with your healthcare power of attorney and living will. Those could also be important to access when the banks are closed!
