Ask Terry Questions Portfolio Strategy age 81

Portfolio Strategy age 81

By Terry Savage on June 14, 2022 | Investments

I am 81 and am concerned about the equity exposure in my portfolio. The “do nothing and hope they recover” approach by most advisors does not seem prudent for me at this time.
Comments appreciated!

Well, I’ve been saying that for the last two years! It’s a little late to decide on a “strategy” when the market is down 20%. But the market could drop even farther — and I think it will! And it could stay down longer than many people think.

Are you listening to a broker — who only wants commissions? Are you doing this yourself? Do you have a Fee-only FIDUCIARY financial planner advising you? (Find one here.)

And if ALL your money is in the stock market, don’t want for that kind of consultation at your age. If you don’t have at least 20% of your investment assets in a money market fund, you might want to sell some now — or on any slight bounce — and leave the money earning next to nothing in a money market deposit account.
