PUA gig worker unemployment

By Terry Savage on May 17, 2020 | Wild Card

HI Terry-
I am a photographer and am currently unemployed due to the pandemic. Almost all of my work is as a self employed photographer, for which I receive 1099-misc. Obviously, none of this work was previously eligible for unemployment insurance. However, I had one part time job (working 1 day per week), where i received a w-2. through the layoff of this job, I applied for unemployment in March and am receiving a small amount, plus the $600 per week. Can I apply for unemployment for the 1099 work as well? i made far more money through the self-employed work and could definitely use a larger check. Thanks so much for reviewing my question.

This is a tough question, and you’re not alone in asking about it. The IDES hasn’t given me any guidance on this although I have requested it. I’m tempted to say “leave well enough alone” because at least you’re getting the small state amount plus Federal payment! Many others haven’t been able to get through to get ANY benefits.
And once qualified for regular unemployment, people get turned down for PUA benefits because one question is: “Have you been denied traditional benefits?” Obviously, you haven’t!
It’s not fair and it’s not what you’re entitled to — but look at it this way, absent the Cares Act you wouldn’t have gotten this much.
