Ask Terry Questions PUA Program

PUA Program

By Terry Savage on May 16, 2020 | Wild Card

There doesn’t seem to be a form for the self employed. You have to file for unemployment, get denied, then file for PUA from what I gather. The unemployment application section is geared to those who have been thru the 26 weeks of unemployment already. I, as the sole proprieter of my residential cleaning business, I could not apply till May 11th. Need your advice as to which is more applicable for my situation, the PUA Program or loan that is not expected to be paid back. I claim all of my income as a self employed residential office cleaner.

This is the toughest question. If you get the PPP loan, then you must use it for payroll — and can’t apply again till it runs out. By then the Federal $600/week program will be ending onJuly 25th.
If you apply on the self-employed state unemployment program it will take weeks to get turned down for traditional unemployment and then get certified under the PUA plan. But I’d go that way, because once you get in you’re supposed to get the backdated $600/week in addition to your regular benefits.
