Recession Proof Employment

By Terry Savage on November 07, 2022 | Wild Card

Hi Terry! I was laid off from my job as a senior paralegal in February of this year. I’ve been on numerous interviews with no job offers. As a result, I’ve been working as a contract paralegal since April. What can I do to make my employment situation recession-proof? It’s really been frustrating and I’m deflated. I don’t know what to do as I know contractors will be the first to go when companies cut back. Thanks in advance.

Gosh, I’m not an expert in job search, but two questions come to mind:
1. Where did you post your resume? Try ALL the online sites, but especially the ones that specialize in legal positions.
2. Is there something that comes up with either your references or a google search of your name that might cause employers to think twice? You should contact a place that turned you down and ask why! Tell them there might be some confusion with another person of a similar name and you’re trying to get it sorted out. And maybe that’s exactly what’s happening!

And finally, do a review of your resume. Is there something in it that might be misconstrued? Or a grammatical error?
Last, contact the individual lawyers at your previous firm and see if they can make an intro to someone at another firm. If they liked you, they may be willing to do that.
