reclaimation of s.s. benefit after death

By Terry Savage on April 06, 2024 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My Mom died on Feb. 22, she received her s.s. benefit on Mar.1st by direct deposit. On Mar. 27th they Reclaimed the payment. Since they hold back your payment by one month, isn’t she supposed to get and keep the Feb. payment? or at least 22 days worth.

Terry Says

With Social Security, each payment received represents the previous month’s benefits. So if a person dies in January, the check for that month — which would be paid in February — would need to be returned if received.
