Refiance after divorce

By Terry Savage on January 23, 2021 | Wild Card

Hi Terry,
I am in the process of a divorce and want to know if filing married but separately would benefit me? We did not receive any stimulus because my ex makes too much, however I make under the $75,000 threshold so I wonder if I would receive back stimulus filing my taxes separately.
Thank you!

Terry Says

Yes, you can get not only the 2020 stimulus, but also claim the original stimulus IF you file “married filing separately” for 2020 a few weeks from now when the forms are out. Claim your stimulus on Line 30. Just make sure your about-to-be ex does NOT file a joint return with your SS#.

You qualify if your own income is under %75,000.

But also check with your divorce attorney for any other implications this might have for your divorce proceedings.
