Retirement money — belongs to HER!

By Terry Savage on December 28, 2021 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I had to retire early due to health reasons. Consequently our retirement nest egg is a 401k plan that belongs to my wife from her employer. When she retires and we rollover that plan are there any problems with that nest egg being in her name only?

Terry Says

It can ONLY be in her name only. Otherwise she has to pay taxes on it! This is not your “group” nestegg; it is HER retirement plan.
I suggest you look into your Social Security benefits, and any other work-related benefits you may have. Otherwise, you are dependent on her — whether the money remains in the 40l(k) account or she rolls it into an IRA rollover at a place like Fidelity or Vanguard.
