Ask Terry Questions Retirement/SSA

Retirement/SSA

By Terry Savage on September 10, 2026 | Financial Planning / Retirement

Hi Terry, I retired this yr at 65 1/2. I’m thinking about taking my SSA when I turn 66. I could wait until 67 & draw down from my IRA. My financial advisor calculated I’d have to live until 80 to break even on the difference between taking it 1 yr early. What are your thoughts? Thank you, love your segment on WGN

Terry Says

No, no, no!!! It’s not about “breaking even”! It’s about having a higher check on which future inflation adjustments will be made. Your broker just doesn’t want to lose the fees he/she gets from your total assets under management!
