Retirement with a police pension
Hi Terry, I’m turning 62 in July and currently collecting a police pension. The 22 years working as a police officer our department also payed in to social security.
Will my pension count as income , and penalize my benefits if I were to apply for my as benefits before 67 ?
Thank you,
Terry Says
You may fall under the provisions of the WEP — windfall elimination program — which reduces SS benefits to offset the public pension you receive. But it depends on the terms of that pension — and how you paid into SS. Read this article if you want to try to understand how it works! https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/IF/IF10203
You could ask Social Security, but they consistently give out wrong answers. See recent columns on my website. Instead, I suggest you go to www.MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com and pay the $39 to get the correct answer — before you talk to SS.
