Ask Terry Questions RMD and annuities

RMD and annuities

By Terry Savage on March 02, 2019 | Financial Planning / Retirement

Can a payment from an annuitized annuity be applied to satisfy your total yearly RMDs?

Terry Says

If the annuity itself was held inside a “qualified” retirement plan, such as an IRA, then the withdrawal from it — even if annuitized — will count towards your total RMD from all your retirement accounts.

But if you simply purchased the annuity in your own name, then the payouts do not qualify as part of your RMD.
