RMD stock sales
Is it better to sell stocks with losses or gains in a traditional IRA to get enough cash for the required RMD? Or should individual stocks be evaluated for their potential future gains or losses? Thank you for you insight on this topic.
Terry Says
It doesn’t make any difference! All money comes out of an IRA eventually taxed at ordinary income rates, so gains and losses don’t make a difference. Just sell the stock you don’t want to see in your portfolio next year, and use the proceeds for this year’s RMD.
