Ask Terry Questions Saving bonds

Saving bonds

By Terry Savage on March 19, 2020 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My husband passed away last week. I have $100 savings bonds payable on death to me. Does the economic crisis affect the amount paid, if I cash them in now?

Terry Says

My condolences on your loss. No, the amount won’t change. But everything is such a mess right now that I would wait a while — unless you desperately need the money — to cash them in.

And, don’t make any other moves. But do take a look at any other assets he might have left to you — including his retirement plan at work. If he had a 40l(k) or IRA and you are the beneficiary, and depending on this money, then ask the custodian to move the account to all cash or money market mutual funds. Don’t worry about the prices you get. If this is all the money you have, just keep it safe.
