I wanted to open a savings account so I can start saving some money. Is there a better alternative to a savings account?

If you’re just starting out, go to your bank and open a money market deposit account. Set up an automatic transfer from your checking account every month. Don’t worry about the interest. Then write back to me when you have saved $1,000.
