Ask Terry Questions self employment loans /unemployment

self employment loans /unemployment

By Terry Savage on May 13, 2020 | Wild Card

My best friend owns a small gym with no employees. He’s trying to keep from shutting his doors for good due to Corona-19. You were interviewed on WGN9 morning news on 5/11 and you mentioned
a new program through IDES that would help self employed businesses with loans or unemployment. Would he qualify or can you offer any information about this? Thanks. This is no joke.

Terry Says

Oh, I know it’s not a joke. He is likely eligible for the PUA (pandemic unemployment assistance) benefits. But he has to first go register for traditinal unemployment, then be turned down, then go on to register for the PUA.
He can do it all here:
https://www2.illinois.gov/ides/Pages/default.aspx
But the only problem is that it will take weeks to first get turned down, then reapply for PUA. It’s totally idiotic, I agree.
He can also call Wintrust (they have PPP money) and apply now for PPP — small biz payroll assistance at the same time. If he gets that money it must be used for payroll — HIM. It might come more quickly than the PUA.
