Ask Terry Questions Social Security

Social Security

By Terry Savage on July 18, 2026 | Social Security

Hello Terry
My wife and I are both 70 years old and collecting social security my benefit is higher than hers. If I die before her, would she then only be getting her benefit and mine just goes away? Or is there something she can get as a surveying spouse from mine?

Love listening to you on WGN
Thank you

Terry Says

At your death, your wife gets the higher of the full SS benefits you were receiving at death, or hers. She gets whichever is higher.
