Social Security

By Terry Savage on September 05, 2026 | Social Security

I am 65 and 4 months old (Born 1961). I have been collecting my SS benefits. My husband passed July 2026 at the age of 69, he also had been collecting. Do I have to wait until I am age 67 to collect 100 percent of my husband’s benefits?

Terry Says

You are entitled to your husband’s benefit NOW if you were married at time of death. BUT, that benefit will be reduced because you started collecting your own before your full retirement age. IN any case, it’s worth contacting Social Security and asking for your widow’s benefit, because it will almost certainly be larger (even if reduced) than your own reduced benefit.
