Social Security
Hi Tery, I’ve been watching you on WGN for years. My name is Stefanie I am 50 years old and currently married. I do live in Illinois. My question is ….if I retire at 62 and take my own Social Security, am I eligible for half of my husbands Social Security when he retires at 67 or 70 or will I be penalized for taking mine first? Thank you.
Terry Says
If half of his is larger than yours, you can take his– BUT the amount you get will be permanently lower because you started early. Be my guest and retire at 62. But don’t plan on taking SS until your full retirement age. You’d have such a low benefit at age 62, that you might as well get a part-time job instead!
