Ask Terry Questions Social security

Social security

I was married 30 years and have not remarried. Do I get some of his social security without reducing his amount. Do I still get my spousal support? I plan to retire at 70.

Terry Says

Yes, if you had been married 10 years and have not remarried, you get 50% of his benefit — UNLESS your own benefit (based on your own work record) gave you a higher monthly check. You can’t get the benefit until he is eligible to get his own SS.
And it does NOT reduce his check.
But you should wait until your full retirement age (nearly 67) to collect. If you claim earlier, the benefit amount is reduced, to as low as 32.5 percent of your ex’s full benefit if you file at 62.
