Social Security
I have been getting widows social security payments since my husband died several years ago. I am still working part time and my employer is deducting SS from my pay check. I am 76 years old and have worked most of my adult life. How do I know if I am better off continuing with his payments or taking mine. I am nervous about calling the SS office as they might lower my pay outs.
I listen to you all the time on WGN and get your news letter.

I understand your concern. Social Security should be giving you your own benefits PLUS the difference between your earned benefit and your spouse’s benefit. That’s really what you’re getting — yours, AND the excess from HIS. So before giving you “his” they surely looked at yours when you signed up.
If your spouse worked full time and had a larger benefit, and you are just working part-time, then it’s unlikely your benefit amount would increase.
But yes, everyone who has earned income must continue to pay into SS! (That’s for your grandchildren!!)
