Ask Terry Questions Social Security

Social Security

By Terry Savage on February 27, 2023 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My wife and I are both on Social Security. When one dies does the surviving spouse lose the spouse who passed away their benefits?

Terry Says

The surviving spouse gets the spouse’s benefit — IF it is higher than his/her own. But the survivor only gets the amount that would have been paid at the decedent’s full retirement age. (no benefit to the survivor based on the decedent waiting until age 70.)
