Good afternoon I listen as much as possible when your on with John Williams. Turnig 70 November 14 this year. It’s my deadline to start collecting monthly benifits. There is a local office out here in DuBuque Iowa. Do I just go in… you have mentioned that they make errors.. I want to make sure I am getting everythig I’m entitled to.

Good for you for waiting.  First, I would spend the $49 to go to Calculate Your Highest Benefits | Maximize My Social Security    That will let you know what benefit you SHOULD receive.  It will ask about other public service pensions, for example, that might impact your monthly benefit.

Then contact your local SS office, or go online to The United States Social Security Administration | SSA   You can apply for benefits there.  Put in your application two or three months before you reach age 70.  They will ask what month you choose to have benefits start.  (Benefits are paid one month in arrears.) Just make sure they do not start BEFORE the month in which you reach age 70!
