Social security benefit

By Terry Savage on August 27, 2022 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My husband is 78 years old. I turn 70 years old in Sept 2022. For the past few years, I have been receiving monthly social security benefits at the spousal benefit rate. When should I convert to my full social security benefit. Will I be required to do so at a specific age?

Terry Says

You should immediately convert to your own benefits – IF they are higher than your spousal benefit. There’s no point waiting past your own full retirement age. Contact SS immediately. they should have figured that out for you.
And first read this page to help you calculate which is higher — your own benefit or the half of your spouse’s benefit at his full retirement age.
