Ask Terry Questions social security benefits

social security benefits

By Terry Savage on January 23, 2025 | Social Security

My wife is 75 years old and is receiving a teacher’s pension. She did not work enough to qualify for social security benefits. I took social security retirement benefits at the full retirement age. Under the recently passed social security fairness act, can my wife receive 50% of my social security benefits? Thank you.

Terry Says

Your spouse is now eligible for 50% of your full retirement benefit — no longer reduced because she has a public service pension. She should apply immediately. And, it should be retroactive to Jan 1, 2024.
