Ask Terry Questions Social Security Benefits for surviving spouse

Social Security Benefits for surviving spouse

By Terry Savage on December 05, 2019 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I’m 67 on Social Security, my wife is 65 on Social Security disability. If one of us dies before the other will the surviving spouse get the others benefits ?

Terry Says

Surviving spouses get either half of the deceased’s benefits — or their own, whichever is greater. In two years, when your wife reaches Full Retirement Age, your wife’s SS disability benefits will automatically change to her earned Social Security benefits. And if you die after that point, she will receive either her SS benefits or half of yours, whichever is greater.
