Ask Terry Questions SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS

SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS

By Terry Savage on April 20, 2013 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My wife and I receive SS benefits and I have a part time job. Since I have contributed the max during my pre retirement jobs will I ever benefit from the amounts that are withdrawn from my current paychecks? Also, is there a way to check if my current benefits are correct? Thank you.

SAVAGE SAYS: If you are earning income, they will? deduct Social Security (FICA) from your paycheck. Live long enough, and you will certainly collect more than you put in!? Statistics show that after about 5 years, you will have received more in today’s dollars, than you contributed over a lifetime of work!

And yes, you can go to the Social Security website and view all the years of your employment history, and the contributions that were made. Remember, years ago the “cap” on income that was taxed for SS was far lower!
