Social Security death benefit

By Terry Savage on November 08, 2022 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My husband passed away in 2013, can I collect his Social Security when I turn 62? I am still working full time and I will be 62 this January, is there a stipulation on how much money I make?
I got 2 different answers from Social Security. We were married for 27 years when he passed away.

Actually, you could start collecting a REDUCED benefit at age 60 on his work record. BUT DONT DO THAT!! You will receive a significantly lower benefit for life! Wait until your own full retirement age so you can collect 100% of his benefit, or yours, whichever is higher.
Here’s a great article from AARP describing the options in your situation.
