Ask Terry Questions Social security disability

Social security disability

By Terry Savage on April 29, 2024 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I am asking on behalf of a friend. She
Is 61 years old and has MS. She worked for both Cook County and in the private sector. She gets a very small pension from Cook County.
A couple years ago she asked social security if she was eligible for Social security disability but was told no because she did not have enough disability
Credits.
Have you ever heard of this? She is very low income and really needs the disability check.
Where should she go next?
Thank You

Terry Says

She should go back and ask again for disability from SS.  She might have dealt with a dumb SS rep (there are many of them) — but if she gets the same answer “not enough credits to be eligible for disability” then she should turn to the Illinois Department on Aging to see what other benefits she might get from the state.  Illinois Department on Aging
