Ask Terry Questions Social Security Fairness Act

Social Security Fairness Act

By Terry Savage on February 10, 2025 | Social Security

I receive a SURS pension because my late husband (Donald Carlson) was employed by the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL. He passed away 6 years ago, December 28, 2018. Am I able to take advantage of the Social Security Fairness Act that eliminates WEP and GPO reduced social security benefits for public sector workers with pensions not covered by Social Security.

Terry Says

Yes. And if you aren’t receiving ANY SS benefits, apply now. If you are receiving some SS benefits, but they are reduced, they will automatically get around to raising your benefits and giving you money retroactive to the start of 2024.
