social security fairness act — angry

By Terry Savage on January 06, 2025 | Wild Card

Hi Terry, I just read your article about the Social Security Fairness Act and need some clarification. I am a retired teacher and also paid into social security for 12 years as a corporate recruiter. When retired I was told of the “windfall”. Having paid more into my pension than social security , I only received a portion of my social security and all of my pension. I certainly was in disbelief as I had worked very hard for my money only to be denied all that I had paid into the system. My question to you is, as it was unclear, will there be retrograde pay for all the years the government was spending my money that I paid into Social Security? And if not ,why not? I don’t care if it costs $195 billion, our government wastes that much on wars and frivolous spending with no real justification. Secondly, why do I have to spend $49.00 to find out how much is owed me? With my pension and the small amount I get from my social security , I’m going to have to come out of retirement and go back to work just to keep a roof over my head let alone afford my prescription I require. I am 75 years of age.. Yet we can financially take care of thousands of illegal immigrants who have paid nothing into our system. I apologize for bending your ear but I am furious and know that you will give me straight answers, I have the upmost respect for your knowledge and reporting the truth to your listeners. I hope you can provide some insight to this issue and my questions.
Respectfully,

I can understand your anger. Here are the facts:
1. You don’t have to pay $49 to get the amount of your full benefit. You can go on the SS website and create your own “my Social Security” account, using login.gov — That will give you the amount of your full benefit, without reductions.
2. There will be no retroactive payments — although the bill says the payments should start at the end of 2023, so there is some slight home that they will pay the “difference” in benefits for 2024 in one lump sum. But I’m not hopeful that is how it will be resolved.
3. Yep, a lot of people have written in with the same kind of commentary. You can only “beat” the system by living a long time and continuing to collect your SS benefit. So calm down and stay healthy.
