Ask Terry Questions Social security for ex spouse

Social security for ex spouse

By Terry Savage on February 19, 2022 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My exwife is entitled to a percentage of my social security because we were married for 18 years. My question is, does her percentage reduce my benefit or is it separate?

Terry Says

No, as long as she is not remarried, she can collect 50% of your benefits — and it doesn’t impact your benefit at all. And if you have two 10-year marriages, both can collect on your work record. (If they would receive more based on THEIR earnings record, then they will get their own benefit.
Your ex should wait until she reaches her own FULL RETIREMENTAGE to start collecting.
