Social security for ex-spouse, married 10 years

By Terry Savage on June 19, 2023 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I’ve was married for 10 years and 6 months. We are divorced. Want to know if when she applies for social security, my benefits will be affected.
She is currently working. She is already collecting a city pension, when she retires she will get another government pension. She is going to work till full retirement age.

Terry Says

Your benefits will NOT be impacted by any benefits your spouse qualifies for. And yes, she will qualify for “some” benefits on your record, since you were married for more than 10 years.
BUT she may not get much on your record. There is something called a WEP — windfall elimination provision — offset that will lower any benefits she receives (including from your record) if she has a public pension.

It’s complicated, and I suggest that if you remain friends, you direct her to www.MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com to get the correct benefit estimate. Social Security gets it wrong most of the time!!
