Ask Terry Questions Social security for spouse

Social security for spouse

By Terry Savage on February 21, 2022 | Financial Planning / Retirement

If my wife (retired) elects to claim her social security early, say age 62-64, before the full retirement age of 67, will that affect my benefit as spouse? I plan to take my benefit at FRA of 67? We realize her benefit will be less taking it before 67. Thank you for your time.

Terry Says

It is ALWAYS a huge mistake to take SS early if you can possibly wait till FRA. BUT, unless you plan to claim on her benefits (because they would be larger, or you didn’t work) then it won’t impact YOUR benefits. Another BIG BUT — if you die, she can only get half of your SS benefits, or her own reduced benefit, whichever is larger. Either way, she will lose out in a serious way down the road if she is alone. Please ask her to wait.
